Wood engraving has a rich history in the world of printmaking. It was a prominent method for producing illustrations in books, magazines, and newspapers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Both a versatile and creative medium it will enable you to express your artistic ideas in a unique way, whilst connecting you to an appreciation of historical craftsmanship and personal satisfaction. The raised portions of the block, created by carving, are then inked and pressed onto paper to produce prints.
Unlike woodcut printing, wood engraving uses the denser end-grain of wood, enabling finer lines and highly detailed illustrations. Hannah teaches this tactile and hands-on approach to art-making, a passionate cross-over from her own printmaking practice, enabling you to create finely detailed and visually captivating images.
What will I learn?
the art of wood engraving through an introduction to the engraving tools, their uses and methods of application
how to create your first print on a test block by following a series of mark-making techniques
have an understanding of end-grain wood and the types of wood used
how to use the relief printmaking press
how to hand burnish your wood engraving at home.
by the end of the course you'll have a small edition of detailed prints on handmade paper.

Where is the course held?
At my studio in Rowde near to Devizes in Wiltshire - Studio address: Furlong Close, Rowde, Devizes, Wiltshire, SN10 2TQ
There is plenty of free parking, the studio is surrounded by countryside in a peaceful location. Access is also possible via public transport (walking distance from nearest bus stop), it is also a short walk from Caen Hill Locks.
What's included?
All tools and materials are included, you may purchase extra materials from the studio after the workshop if needed. Refreshments and access to toilet facilities. Free parking.
